By the time the bluebonnets have faded from the fields, new photo-taking opportunities will have sprung up. Traders Village, a jumbo flea market and midway at 9333 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX 78242, will host a 10-acre field of a variety of sunflowers on weekends during the month of May. A petting zoo and a maze will be part of the activities and you’ll also be able to purchase sunflowers to take home. Visit the Traders Village website for admission fees and open hours.
For one day only, on Saturday, May 1 (opening date is contingent on the flowers being ready), George Farms will open their one-acre Poteet patch to the public, featuring giant zinnias and sunflowers. James and Jennifer George, the farm’s owners, said this is the first time they’ve held a flower-picking event at their family farm, located at 595 Mobile Home Alley, Poteet, TX 78065. Enjoy on-site food and merchandise vendors, play some games, grab a brush and paint a flower pot, or opt for some photo-taking in the patch. The entry fee is $5 per person and $1.50 per zinnia or $2 per sunflower. Tickets will be sold at the door. Check for updates at George Farms Facebook page. Looking for something more fierce than flowers? The San Antonio Zoo is featuring Dragon Forest on select days through October 31, a separate exhibit located behind the zoo parking garage. This festive medieval kingdom brings to life 15 dragons and an enchanting time with great food like turkey legs, kettle corn, and Bavarian nuts. Enjoy signature drinks such as Butter Beer, Dragon’s Blood, and other adult beverages. The main festival stage offers live entertainment such as falconry demonstrations and the San Antonio Zoo’s Animal Ambassador Team with their feathered, furry, and scaly wild animal friends. Tickets can be purchased separately for this special exhibit or in combination with zoo admission. Visit the Dragon Forest website for more information and operating hours.
